The Omega 3’s in fish oil could help to improve eye conditions like dry eye up to 105% according to recent research from The Advanced Eye Centre in Chandigarh, India.

The discovery indicated that Omega 3 fish oil supplements can help the symptoms of dry eye such as itchiness, stinging sensations or pain and sensitivity to light.

If this isn’t treated promptly it can result in impaired vision, blindness and other long term damage.

Dry eyes affects about 33% of the population and according to these estimates, it’s one of the most common eye complaints in the world.

Numerous health experts have informed the public about the various health benefits involved with eating Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly when it involves preventing cardiovascular diseases like heart attacks and strokes. Omega 3s and polyunsaturated fats found in salmon, sardines, mackerel along with nuts and seeds is thought to play a vital contribution in combating ‘dry eye’ syndrome.

The research from The Advanced Eye Centre studied 60 Indian patients who had moderate and untreated eye disease. Over a period of 12 weeks they were given a fish oil capsule with 1.2gm of Omega 3 or a Vitamin E placebo.

Patients then received eye drops and warm compresses and the results indicated that “Statistics showed significant improvements in those patients who took Omega 3 fatty acid capsules when compared to those simply taking Vitamin E.”By the end of the 12 weeks, the tear break-up time had increased by 105% in the omega 3 group, compared to an improvement of 51% in the placebo group.

The tear film quality also increased by 50% in those taking the Omega 3 fish supplements, versus 12% in those who had the placebo. “The lacrimal glands or the almond shaped glands in the eye provide watery tears that form a film across the eyes. While the meibomian glands (the sebaceous glands at the rim of the eyelid) require omega-3 fatty acids and these produce oils that float across the eye surface while blinking. It is these glands that act as cling film in keeping tears away and reducing any evaporation,” said Dr David Allamby, a world renowned eye care specialist and laser eye surgeon from London’s FOCUS Clinic.

Dry eyes can also be caused by prolonged periods of time without blinking the eyes, such as during reading or looking at a computer screen for too long. Keeping the eyes well rested is therefore important if you want to avoid this condition and it’s recommended to avoid smoky, dusty or windy environments.
