Acupuncture may be a powerful tool for effective weight loss according to new research. This is an exciting finding for anyone who has ever struggled to lose weight.

The research was carried out as part of an experiment to test the efficacy of acupuncture as a tool for weight control, according to The School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) and Hong Kong’s Baptist University.

Seventy-two individuals between the ages of 18 to 68 years old with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or above were observed – and all of the participants had not taken any kind of weight loss tool or medication for up to three months before the trial.

Participants were divided into groups and given a placebo or acupuncture treatment. The treatments went on for 16 sessions in an 8 week period.

Acupuncture was received on various points of the body including the abdomen and various points along with the lower limbs.

Ear acupressure stimulation was also given on auricular points of hunger, shenmen, spleen and the stomach. It is these acupuncture points in Chinese medicine that can encourage energy to flow within the intestines. These acupoints can also transform body fluid and discharge phlegm too.

Results from the study showed that those in the acupuncture group saw an average body weight decline of 2.47kg, while their average BMI decreased by 1.56kg/m2. One successful participant lost 7.2kg, dropping 3.2kg/m2 in BMI. By comparison, the group who received the placebo treatment experienced an average weight loss of 0.54kg and a reduction of 0.19kg/m2 in BMI.

The study’s main researcher stated that acupuncture may have a stimulating effect to serotonin and beta endorphin. This can control appetite and enhance lipolysis activity, supporting the weight loss process. The study provides further evidence that acupuncture can be used as a safe and effective tool for weight loss control.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture is defined as a treatment derived from Ancient Chinese medicine that has been around for over 3000 years. Fine needles are inserted into the skin on various parts of the body.

There are various medicinal uses for acupuncture and it may help to relieve several types of chronic pain including osteoarthritis, knee pain, neck and lower back pain. Additionally, acupuncture may help to lessen the frequency and intensity of headaches and prevent migraines.

Acupuncture may also help with treating a variety of other health problems including anxiety, depression, nausea, insomnia and infertility. However, when acupuncture is not performed correctly it can cause other serious health concerns.
