With Halloween approaching, I thought I’d turn my attention to something that can be genuinely frightening for some people, although perhaps not in the traditional ghosts and ghouls sense!
It started with an email from a reader who mentioned having difficulty swallowing capsules, but it’s also something that comes up regularly when I speak to people who telephone us at Good Health Naturally.
For some, it’s the size of the capsule. For others, it’s the sensation of swallowing it or the worry that it might get stuck. Whatever the reason, it’s understandable that people start looking for alternatives.
The good news is that capsules and tablets aren’t the only options available.
Can You Open a Capsule Instead?
This is a question I come across quite often, and the answer is that it depends on the formulation.
Many standard capsules can be opened, with the contents mixed into a little food or drink. However, some have delayed-release or protective coatings designed to keep their contents intact until they reach a particular part of the digestive tract.
Opening these can interfere with how they’re intended to work, so it’s always worth checking before doing so.
There’s also the question of taste! Some supplement ingredients are particularly bitter, pungent or unpleasant once removed from their capsules. Anyone who’s tried opening a capsule containing certain sulphur compounds will probably know exactly what I mean.
A Different Way to Take Your Supplements
Fortunately, supplement formulations have come a long way. From liquid liposomal products to oral sprays and drops, there are now plenty of alternatives to traditional capsules and tablets.

Finding What Works for You
Of course, capsules remain perfectly convenient for many people, and there’s no reason to abandon them if you’re happy taking them.
But if you’ve been struggling, it’s worth knowing that alternatives exist. Sometimes a simple change in format can make your supplement routine much more manageable.
And with Halloween almost upon us, perhaps that’s one less thing to be frightened of!
If you’ve found a particular way of taking supplements that works well for you, do write in. I’m always interested to hear your experiences.
