This newsletter is being written as my seasons change from autumn into winter. We live in Melbourne, in the far south of Australia, and unlike northern Australia, here it gets cold! It’s times like this I really miss the excitement and enthusiasm for celebration of a good old British summer!

This week we’ve been hit with the usual winter colds and viruses. Coughing children, overnight fevers, and me suffering from flu-like symptoms that have knocked me for six. It’s obvious that in winter, we need to boost and supplement our immune system, but I’ve been thinking about summer and the health boosters that we often forget.

As you head into summer (I’m a tad jealous), there are several important things to consider for your health. Here are some key factors and natural supplements that can aid you during this season:

Firstly, and probably obviously, hydration. It is so important to stay adequately hydrated. In hot weather, it’s essential to replenish the fluids your body loses through sweat. A pinch of quality salt added to your water. Coconut water and herbal teas are also good options. Avoid excessive consumption of sugary drinks or caffeinated beverages, as they can contribute to dehydration.

The image of a sunburnt Brit is used here a lot to reinforce the importance of being sun smart (an Australian saying). Get some sun on your skin without sunscreen for the first 20 mins and then if you are staying out in it longer protect your skin from harmful UV radiation by applying a moisturising sunscreen.

Additionally, wear protective clothing, such as hats and lightweight, loose-fitting garments that cover your skin. We can also use natural supplements, such as astaxanthin and vitamin E, that can provide some level of sun protection from within.

While summer is not typically associated with colds and flu, it’s still important to maintain a healthy immune system. Supplements like vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, and probiotics can support immune function. We have been hammering supplements for the last week to assist us with our various colds and flues.

As I sit here with the sun going down at 510pm, I long to be able to take advantage of the pleasant weather to engage in outdoor activities and exercise regularly. Long days mean lots of time to be active. Whether it’s walking, hiking, swimming, or playing sports, physical activity helps maintain cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles, and boosts mood. Additionally, spending time outdoors can improve mental well-being. Now is the chance to take the leap and try out that open water swimming, whether it be a lake, ocean or local outdoor pool/lido, give it a try!

Summer can bring about seasonal allergies due to increased pollen levels. To manage allergies naturally, consider supplements like quercetin, vitamin C, nettle leaf, and bromelain, which may help alleviate symptoms.

We had a BBQ this evening, albeit in the cold and dark. Cooking our grass-fed organic sausages outside is a bit of a tradition, even in winter. As most of the Northern Hemisphere had Monday off, I can imagine a few BBQs and family get-togethers happened.

If you are reading this in the southern hemisphere, embrace it! (even though I know many are escaping to Europe!) With a heart filled with gratitude and a sense of adventure, greet the winter with open arms. Enjoy the chilly days and cosy nights, knowing they are a testament to the rich tapestry of life. Remember, wherever you are, there is beauty to be discovered, memories to be made, and warmth to be found, even in the coldest of seasons.
