Spring season brings more than just flowers and freshly cut grass – for one in five people, it also means an increase in their seasonal allergies such as hayfever.
Common hayfever symptoms may include sneezing or coughing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy, red or watery eyes, and/or an itchy throat, mouth, nose or ears. Loss of smell, pain around the forehead area, along with headache and earaches are other signs to watch out for. Research is now suggesting that taking probiotics can reduce seasonal allergy symptoms, therefore helping to improve your overall quality of life.
What The Probiotics Study Shows
A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has found that taking a combination of certain probiotics such as Lactobacillus gasseri KS-13, Bifidobacterium bifidum G9-1 and Bifidobacterium longum MM-2 may help to reduce allergy symptoms.
This double-blind randomised study took place during allergy season and included 173 people, aged from 26 to 28 years old who had self-reported seasonal allergies. Participants received two probiotic capsules (containing 1.5 billion colony-forming units per capsule) or a placebo.
During this study, participants answered a Mini Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (MRQLQ) to report on the frequency of their symptoms. These symptoms may include sneezing, runny nose, nasal and eye irritation and more. All of these can have an impact on and show greater improvements for their allergy-related quality of life, as reported on the MRQLQ, when compared with the placebo group.
Previous research has also found that the Lactobacillus salivarius probiotic may help to reduce symptoms in children who are allergic to mold and dust. The connection between beneficial gut bacteria and eye and nose irritation therefore suggests that healthy gut bacteria can improve immune regulation and prevent immune cells from overreacting to allergens. All of these allergy symptoms can affect the quality of your life.
Other studies have also found that taking probiotics can have a beneficial effect on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), along with inflammatory bowel disease and skin conditions such as acne and eczema.
Probiotics are highly recommended for supporting your gut health and improving your immune response. It does this by inhibiting the growth of harmful gut bacteria and promoting the production of natural antibodies.
