My father, Robert, who founded Good Health Naturally, sadly passed away this week, a year ago. It’s a sad time in my family but also a happy one, remembering all of the good times we had. I haven’t made it back to the UK to be with my mum and siblings this year, so I will have my own remembrance and light a candle with my family here in Australia.
As most of you will know, my Dad’s passion was natural health and helping people to be the healthiest version of themselves. He wrote these weekly newsletters for as long as I can remember, immersing himself in his subject and trying to digest the myriad of papers, articles and reports he came across. It was a task I’m only now realising the scale of. It’s taken me almost this whole year to be able to start writing my own version of these newsletters.
As I continue to process my grief, I thought it is fitting and perhaps healing to focus this week on the power of supplements in supporting emotional healing and resilience.
Grief and negative emotions are an inevitable part of the human experience. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a major life transition, or prolonged stress, these emotional challenges can take a toll on our mental and physical well-being. While seeking professional support is crucial during such times, an emerging body of evidence suggests supplements can play a supportive role in promoting emotional healing and resilience.
Certain nutrients have been found to positively impact mood regulation and alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety, which often accompany grief and negative emotions. For instance, omega-3 fatty acids, found in our own Krill Oil, have shown promising results in research for reducing depressive symptoms and are essential in supporting overall mental health.
Grief and negative emotions can also lead to chronic stress. This has definitely happened to me over the last year and has affected my physical and mental health. Lithium orotate, found in Lithium Balance has been a valuable nutrient to me during this time and has helped calm my mind and promoted a more positive mood.
L-tryptophan, L-theanine and B-vitamins
Grief and negative emotions can often cloud our thinking and impair cognitive function. Nutrients like l-tryptophan, l-theanine and B-vitamins can help us be more resilient to stress and help us get through difficult times. These are found in our Relaxwell supplement, which is ideal for supporting mental clarity and concentration, even during the most emotional periods. L-theanine can be particularly calming and is associated with improved focus, helping to manage stress and anxiety more effectively.
As always, nutrition plays a crucial function in our health and wellness. During periods of grief and emotional turmoil, individuals may neglect their nutritional needs, leading to deficiencies that exacerbate negative emotions. Therefore, supplements can be a valuable source of vital nutrients, ensuring the body receives the necessary support during these difficult times. B vitamins, particularly folate, impact mood and support the production of neurotransmitters associated with positive emotions. Additionally, minerals such as magnesium and zinc help regulate mood and can be obtained through supplementation.
My family in the UK are planning a get-together this weekend to celebrate my father’s life. One of his many beliefs was the importance of trees to the planet, so in his honour, Mum has purchased an oak tree and will be planting it on some land my father purchased shortly before his death. Hopefully, my children and their cousins will be able to play on, rest under and be shaded by it for years to come. I still miss him dearly.
