Health News (Week 19 – 2017)
By Robert Redfern
Summer is here in the North and there is never a better time than to think of the long-term protection of your skin and no better antioxidant for this than Astaxanthin.
It’s shown in studies to be the most powerful antioxidant supplement for protecting your skin from premature ageing and other skin problems from excess sun exposure. You need the sun for good health and so the sun should not be avoided. Astaxanthin may also help prevent and reverse retinal damage from too much sun exposure and is used alongside two other powerful carotenoids – lutein and zeaxanthin.
My whole family uses this when they come to visit us in Mallorca and so we have to get extra supplies for them all!
However Astaxanthin offers much more than just skin protection!
While it is amazing for your skin, you may want to consider taking it to reduce mental and physical fatigue. Japanese studies showed that Astaxanthin significantly reduced symptoms of mental and physical fatigue, when compared to the placebo. Results from this included clarity of thinking, improved concentration, mood and motivation. While feelings of irritation and body heaviness were considerably reduced.
You may want Astaxanthin for its strong free radical scavenging activity which helps to protect the body’s cells, organs and tissues from oxidative stress. Research published in The American Journal of Cardiology provides solid evidence that daily supplementation with Astaxanthin can inhibit the damaging effects of oxidative stress that leads to heart disease, heart attack and dementia. Astaxanthin has also been found to lower triglycerides and raise HDL-cholesterol as well as improve blood flow”.
Results of a 2002 study into the effects of Astaxanthin on liver function showed that it protects the liver from oxidative damage (those powerful antioxidant properties at work again). The study also showed that a 100mg dose of Astaxanthin induced detoxifying enzymes in the cells of the liver, thereby improving its ability to remove harmful contaminants, bacteria, viruses and dead red blood cells.
Did I mention what Astaxanthin is?
Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring compound that gives the reddish pink colour to marine organisms such as crabs, shrimp and salmon. It is often called the King of Carotenoids because of its powerful antioxidant potency.
It is obtained by cultivating naturally occurring microalgae, Haematococcus pluvialis, in unique closed‐bio systems. These closed‐bio systems control crucial parameters (heat‐light‐water) for growth and accumulation of astaxanthin. The closed systems protect the microalgae from environmental contaminants and create the purest and most potent natural astaxanthin in the world.
Astaxanthin has also been found to improve the health of the brain and central nervous system. Studies show that it can improve both learning and memory skills – something which could be particularly beneficial to anyone at risk (through hereditary genes) of vascular dementia.
Don’t Buy Astaxanthin, Do Buy AstaXanthin!!
Like most supplements there are good and bad forms and this is especially true when it comes to Astaxanthin, which is why I used AstaReal in my super AstaXanthin formulation. This is sourced in the USA and Sweden and is the only one I have found with no carcinogens detected. The same can’t be said of offshore Astaxanthin from China, Chile and even some Astaxanthin produced in the USA. So be careful.

By the way, I also added a super dose of DHA…
DHA for Brain Health
DHA is a structural fat, making up approximately 30% of the structural fats in the gray matter of the brain and 97% of the total omega-3s in the brain.
DHA is a major structural fat in the retina of the eye and it plays an important role in both infant visual development and visual function throughout life.
DHA for Heart Health
DHA is a key component of heart health, in large part because it is found in abundant levels in heart tissue. As a result, DHA is important for heart health throughout life.*
