Eating a diet rich in Omega-3’s may help to avoid high blood pressure in young people, according to preliminary data published at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2016. The observational data from 2,036 young and healthy adults showed an indication that the adults in the highest quarter had 4mm Hg lower systolic and 2mm Hg lower diastolic blood pressure when compared to those with the least amount of Omega-3 fatty acids in their blood.

The data found that in general, the higher the amount of Omega-3 fatty acids within the blood, the lower the systolic and diastolic blood pressure. There are many potential blood pressure benefits and a 2014 meta-analysis of 70 randomised controlled trials show that consuming EPA and DHA omega-3’s is associated with an average of 1.52 mmHg and 0.99 mmHg reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with a placebo. [1]

Cardiovascular benefits are even greater for untreated hypertensive subjects. Their results showed an average reduction of systolic and diastolic blood pressure of 4.51 mmHg and 3.05 mmHg, respectively. The senior author of the study, Dominik Alexander PhD from Exponent Inc said, “When measuring blood pressure, even small reductions can have a significant clinical impact”. According to Stamler, et. al, each 2mmHg reduction reduces stroke mortality by 6%, CVry heart disease mortality by 4% and total mortality by 3%.

What The Study Means

Anyone who wants to improve their blood pressure can do so by improving their intake of Omega-3. Good sources of Omega-3s include wild fish, flaxseed oil, chia seeds, walnuts, soybeans and spinach. Including plenty of these into the diet is highly recommended for best health. Yet when it’s not possible to get this important essential fatty acid it’s vital to supplement Omega-3s instead. Hemp Seed Oil or Krill Oil is a good choice as these are naturally rich sources of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids that are essential for maintaining good health.
