According to the latest news, over two fifths of organisations have reportedly seen an increase in the number of mental health problems like anxiety and depression over the past 12 months, according to the CIPD’s Absence Management annual survey. [1]

This is the sixth consecutive year that levels of mental health problems have increased, indicating that the problem has been steadily getting worse since 2009. The reported increases are most commonly seen in medium-sized and large organisations. They are also associated with long working hours and to the extent that operational demands take start taking precedence over an employee’s wellbeing.

The findings provide a bleak outlook indicating that the number of mental health problems is growing. This is an issue that many managers are now learning to address in their training and providing support for in the workplace.

Addressing the root cause of mental health problems means raising awareness about these issues, providing support for colleagues and ensuring that staff feel happy, healthy, more productive and engaged in their work as a result.

Yet addressing mental health issues this way is only tackling the social aspects and not the root cause. Good mental health starts with getting the right nutrients into the body that support good brain health and mental functioning as part of a holistic approach.
