Increasing your intake of Selenium appears to be a marker of biological aging especially for women, according to a new study from China. Selenium was particularly found to be beneficial for women with diabetes – a significant age-related disease. [1]

For every 1 microgram increase in dietary selenium intake, women with diabetes were found to have telomeres that were 1.84 base pairs longer, according to an analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) in 1999-2000 and 2001-02.

The data showed correlation between selenium intake and longer telomeres – repetitive DNA sequences that protect the ends of chromosomes from becoming frayed or tangled. Longer telomeres are generally associated with fewer illnesses and a longer life according to research. [2]

Scientists reported that the study demonstrates that dietary Selenium intake is significantly associated with telomere length only present in the female population with diabetes in the United States of America. However, men did not show the same association, according to researchers.

It’s thought that estrogen can stimulate telomerase production and may therefore prevent reactive oxygen species damage. Any changes in telomere length may be influenced by estrogen levels in their bodies.

Women also have better antioxidant and physiological properties of selenoproteins, that may reduce telomere attrition. Previous test subjects have shown that female rats have a lower demand for selenium than male rats, which is related to sex differences in telomere attrition.

Researchers however, believe that why dietary selenium intake and telomere length works better in women is unclear, and further studies are needed for confirmation.

The Benefits of Selenium

As a mineral included in 25 selenoproteins in the body, Selenium has many diverse roles including for immune support, thyroid function and reproductive health.

Scientific studies indicate that Selenium can act as a powerful antioxidant to potentially protect against age-related diseases such as heart disease. [3] Along with being beneficial for thyroid health and for boosting the immune system, research shows it may help to prevent mental decline and also reduce your risk of developing certain cancers. [4, 5, 6, 7]

Where Can I Get Selenium?

As a trace element and nutrient, your body needs Selenium to stay healthy. Selenium deficiency is associated with some long-term detrimental effects that may increase the risk of chronic disease

You can find Selenium in numerous food sources including seafood, organ meats and brazil nuts.

For your ease and convenience, taking a Selenium supplement is recommended. We suggest the recommendation below from Good Health Naturally for best results in optimal health and achieving your goals of healthy aging.

Other Recommendations For Healthy Aging

Curcumin

As a potent antioxidant, Curcumin can activate certain proteins like AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) which may help to combat cellular damage and promote longevity in the skin. Curcumin is beneficial for a range of skin conditions such as acne, blemishes, psoriasis, and more. Studies have also shown for example, that both topical and oral curcumin can improve symptoms of plaque psoriasis in 9-12 weeks. [8]

CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10 is a compound that can help to generate energy in your cells. CoQ10 levels naturally decline with age and therefore, taking a supplement is usually recommended. The signs of aging occur at a cellular level and by taking CoQ10, it can enhance the skin’s appearance. Research also shows that taking CoQ10 can have a rejuvenating and energising effect on the skin, making skin look younger. CoQ10 does this by supporting the body’s ability to produce collagen and elastin. When skin cells are replenished, it leads to energised and healthier skin cells.

AstaXanthin

Clinical studies show that taking Astaxanthin can greatly improve skin elasticity and moisture, along with reducing the size of age spots and wrinkles. [9]  Test studies also show that it can significantly improve the symptoms of atopic dermatitis [10]. Being a powerful carotenoid pigment, Astaxanthin may help to protect skin from UV radiation as this is known to be one of the most powerful antioxidants and free radical scavengers anywhere in nature.

Acupressure

The ancient art of acupressure can help to naturally stimulate collagen production in the skin. By stimulating the body’s anti-aging points and gently massaging with a finger or electro-acupressure device to mimic actual acupuncture, you can find natural relief. This may in turn, help to reshape expression lines, improve skin texture, decrease stress while balancing hormonal breakouts. By using an electro-acupressure device such as the HealthPoint™ Kit (see below) you can experience the benefits of acupressure for yourself.

By taking these nutrient recommendations along with Selenium and following a healthy diet and lifestyle, it may increase the possibilities of staying healthy as we age.
