Taking Liposomal Glutathione may help to boost your immune system, says a new study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Glutathione (GSH) is an abundant endogenous antioxidant, meaning the body produces this itself from cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine. When cysteine is in short supply, glutathione levels can drop.

When GSH levels drop, there’s a link associating this with impaired immunity and an increased risk of chronic disease. Glutathione is an antioxidant that stomach acid can destroy, so suppliers usually seek ways to ensure it stays protected once consumed.

Scientists in the study from State Penn University College of Medicine were exploring liposomes’ potential ability to boost glutathione levels in the body.

The results of the study show that the liposomal glutathione did increase GSH levels in healthy adults and that improvements were also seen as immune function markers.

Significant Immune System Iprovements In A Few Weeks

Pilot study results demonstrate that for the first time, increased body stores of GSH after glutathione is orally administered appear to be most effective at two doses of 500mg/d and 1000mg/d.

The study recruited 12 healthy non-smokers between the ages of 50 and 80 who weren’t taking any antioxidant supplements. They were randomly assigned into 2 groups: Those taking a low dose of liposomal glutathione (500mg) and a high dose (1000mg) over a period of 4 weeks.

Results from the study showed that glutathione levels were increased even after only one week. Maximum levels of glutathione were observed after two weeks. These increases were also accompanied by decreased markers of oxidative stress; levels of plasma-8 isoprostane fell by 35% and a decrease of 35% in oxidised to reduced GSH.

Natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxicity is a measure of immune function and this increased by up to 400% over 2 weeks, said the researchers. Lymphocyte proliferation was also seen to increase up to 60% after 2 weeks.

Researchers wrote that collectively these preliminary findings support how effective daily liposomal GSH administration is at elevating stores of GSH. This can impact the oxidative stress levels and immune function.

Glutathione and Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Glutathione is an amazing antioxidant that can reduce oxidative stress in the body and help to improve the immune system. You may want to also consider adding Alpha-Lipoic Acid into your diet alongside liposomal Glutathione as this can help to regenerate antioxidants to ensure their optimum absorption within the body.
