Are you eating foods that cause harm to your blood sugar levels? Every type of food we eat on a daily basis causes biochemical reactions within our bodies. In fact some foods may age us much faster than our biological years while other foods can help to fight the aging process.

The body undergoes three major processes that have a major impact on our rate of aging. These processes are known as “glycation”, “inflammation” and “oxidation”. Aging is really an internal process and not just the physical changes that we can visibly see. It also refers to how well the organs are functioning, and if the joints are healthy or in a process of degradation.

Anyone who has been following me for a long time knows that I am against the consumption of all sugars and starchy carbohydrates, along with trans fats. But what may surprise you about what I’m going to tell you next is how this seemingly “healthy” food can be damaging to your body.

This one food in particular can speed up the aging process and substances known as Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). These are compounds that speed up the aging process within the body and cause damage to your joints, organs and eventually leads to wrinkled skin.

One of the biggest factors that leads to increased production of AGEs within the body is high blood sugar levels. When these are increased dramatically over time, then it can increase age-accelerating AGEs within the body. This effect isn’t simply limited to Type 2 diabetics who may often struggle to appear that they have aged well or may look much older than their real age.  They can happen to anyone who eats a lot of this one food.

What am I talking about?

WHEAT.

More importantly I am referring to any kind of wheat… including the so-called “healthy whole wheat”. Wheat can speed up the aging process within the body and it does this because it contains an unusual kind of carbohydrate known as Amylopectin-A which has been found within tests to spike blood sugar levels HIGHER than even pure table sugar. The Amylopectin-A raises your blood sugar MORE than almost any carbohydrate source and this is based on the blood sugar response that has been documented in studies.

Wheat is in many modern convenience foods not just bread, but in bagels, cereals, muffins, pittas, pizzas and many other baked goods. All of these foods cause high blood sugar levels and the higher the level of these over time, the more AGES are formed within the body and this causes the body to age faster. The whole wheat can also spike blood sugar levels much higher than oatmeal for example.

There are also other health damaging effects of consuming gluten that can cause inflammation within the digestive system, leading to various autoimmune diseases amongst other health problems.

Avoid Premature Aging

If you want to slow down the aging process and stay looking younger for longer, then it’s vital to reduce or eliminate wheat based products entirely from your diet. One of the biggest side effects of this is that you will also lose body fat and find it easier to maintain a healthy weight in the long term.

Avoid baked goods as they contain acrylamides that can form in the browned section of the breads, cereals, muffins, etc. These acrylamides are carcinogenic and have been linked to possible increased risks of accelerated aging and cancer. It’s also important to watch out for corn products as these are also high in sugar and processed vegetable oils that contain excessively refined and processed fats that can cause inflammation within the body. Avoiding all of these ‘foods’ is essential for good health and vitality.

The good news is that there is an alternative…!

You can swap wheat based products for Sprouted Buckwheat Flour instead (Buckwheat is a grain-like seed) that is highly recommended as an alternative to wheat. Sprouted Buckwheat is a rich source of manganese, copper, magnesium, dietary fiber and phosphorus amongst other vitamins and minerals.

If you want to have cereal try Sprouted Oats instead of traditional oats in place of oatmeal, cakes, cookies, etc. Sprouted oats are gluten-free and nutrient dense, meaning they are a healthier option overall if you are looking to improve your health without sacrificing some of your favourite foods.
